Medik8 Crystal Retinal 1 star rating

In a life that can take us by surprise sometimes, I am very grateful to be aging. That being said, I do not want the fine lines and wrinkles that can sometimes come with it - well not anytime soon anyway, I'm only 33.

I can’t remember how many years ago I introduced anti-aging products into my skincare routine but I'm so glad I did. So what can we do to try and slow the process down?

Everyone make way for my best friend..retinol. Hands down one of two products I put down to keeping my skin youthful (yeah you know it - the other one is SPF). First and foremost let’s just give retinol the round of applause that it deserves. Believe the hype guys - it works.

A powerhouse ingredient, the gold standard of skincare - it’s a product we should have in our skincare routine and trust me you won’t regret it. So let’s take a look at Medik8’s Crystal Retinal as an anti-aging product…

Medik8 Retinal not Retinol? Here’s why

There are so many retinols on the market from many different brands, in a variety of strengths, from liquids to creams. My personal preference is cream. I tried 1 or 2 different retinols before landing on Medik8 Crystal Retinal. Medik8 was founded in 2009 and it is well known for its science based skincare and one of their best selling lines is their retinal collection. Did you notice I said retiNAL and not retiNOL?! Well there is a reason and it’s why I love this product as much as I do.

Medik8 use a stabilised retinaldehyde (retinal) which is a next-generation form of Vitamin A. Stabilised by using patented crystal encapsulation, it works as a progressive anti-aging serum that delivers results 11 times faster than retinol and without any added irritation. It really does improve and minimize wrinkles and fine lines whilst also aiding the skin to resurface its texture and allow for a youthful complexion. More on the confusing world of retinols here - Retinol v Retinoid.

It also includes Hyaluronic acid to add hydration to the skin to avoid any dryness. The actual texture of it feels soft on the skin, non irritating for me and doesn’t tingle either. A product that does all of this and helps fight uneven skin tone and blemishes too is a YES from moi!

The best way to apply Medik8 Crystal Retinal

Medik8’s retinal range comes in 5 different strengths. If you are just starting out with it, I would advise to begin with retinal 1 and patch test your skin in case of any reaction. In the evening, use two small pumps for the face and neck, avoiding the eye area - our skin is thinnest there! Allow to absorb and then apply your moisturizer. Start using it twice a week for two weeks, then every other night for the next two weeks and after that you should be able to see how your skin is after using. If well tolerated you can then use it every night. After finishing retinal 1 you can then up your strength to 3 and so on! Always follow up with SPF in the morning after using vitamin A as it makes our skin a bit more sensitive to sun exposure than normal!

What about the price point?

Crystal retinal 1 costs $58/£45 and the higher the strength the higher the price! Now I know that’s quite a bit of money on one product, but I have always said and will continue to say; products that target and help specific skin concerns are worth the spend. This is because we can always buy a cheaper moisturizer or cleanser if our focus is to target a skin concern.

Medik8 Crystal Retinal final thoughts

All in all, I love retinol and my product for it is this Medik8 superhero. As mentioned earlier you can always experiment, whilst patch testing your skin, what works for you in terms of strengths, texture, brands and price point. If you are thinking of trying Medik8’s range - you should hopefully love it just as much as I do.
