Top 6 benefits of a chemical peel

I love my skincare routine, I thoroughly enjoy the process, it actually brings me joy but there does come a point where my skin needs that extra TLC. This is usually when my skin is looking a bit too dull, my blackheads are raging a war on my t-zone or I just genuinely want a pamper session to freshen up my skin.

Queue a facial treatment and I love me a chemical peel sometimes, but what does it do for our skin?

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment, a solution using acids, that is applied to the face to exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin cells and this in turn stimulates the growth of new cells. The goal of a chemical peel is to overall improve the appearance of the skin, for example reducing signs of aging and evening out skin tone.

Different types of chemical peels

  • Superficial chemical peel - only removes the epidermis - the top layer of your skin and lightly exfoliates it. Great for evening out skin texture, targeting clogged pores, evening out skin tone and maintaining a youthful appearance by delaying signs of aging.

  • Medium chemical peel - removes the epidermis and the top layer of your dermis. Great for minor hyperpigmentation and acne scars, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Deep chemical peel - removes your epidermis, along with the upper and middle layer of your dermis. Great for improving moderate to severe sun damage, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles and scars.

How to choose which chemical peel and where to get one

Choosing which chemical peel to go for really depends on your skin concerns and your skin type. I would always advise to have a chemical peel done by a professional, either a dermatologist or a qualified aesthetician. They can tailor and recommend which type of peel you should have and why. For medium-deep chemical peels, a board-certified dermatologist is best.

Benefits of a chemical peel conclusion

Chemical peels have a number of benefits and are a great way of targeting skin concerns, only when performed by a qualified practitioner. Yes there are some side effects with a chemical peel, such as dryness and redness, however the benefits outweigh this. My skin always looks amazing after a peel and it really helps my pores, blackheads and it smooths out my skin. I’m booking a superficial peel very soon and I can’t wait!
